Taking Aim out on the Range

Biathlon is the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship.  Aroostook County provides a unique opportunity for people to experience the sport.  World class venues in both Fort Kent and Presque Isle bring the best biathletes in the world to northern Maine for national and international competition.  At the 10th Mtn Center in Fort Kent and the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle community members can experience the sport first hand when the local clubs, in conjunction with the Maine Winter Sports Center, hold open range sessions.  These opportunities provide citizens the chance to stand (or lay) on the firing range and try for the same targets athletes shoot at when the World Cup comes to town.

Aside from shooting on the range, the easiest way to get started in the sport of biathlon is to grab a pair of skis and hit your local trails.  Kids can get started by joining their local ski club's youth ski program, and joining the Maine Winter Sports Center's Development Program.  For more information visit the Nordic Skiing page.
